I have been dying to try more of Ruth Mastenbroek’s fragrances ever since a friend of mine sent me a decant of Dagian. Ruth’s perfumes are hard to get ahold of in the US, so it was lucky that a friend of mine travelled to England recently. I was not only able to buy a bottle of Dagian, but purchase some samples of her other perfumes. Firedance is the sample that has intrigued me the most of the three I purchased.

I’m pretty neutral as far as rose scents go, but typically I like mine dark and deep like Firedance wears. It starts out with a blast of tart lemon and then settles into a dark, sultry rose. The oud in Firedance is used with a delicate touch; it’s an excellent pairing to the sweeter notes in here. Firedance smells as if you’ve gone deep into the forest. The soil is slightly damp, the dry leaves make a carpet for your feet. A bouquet of roses was thrown onto the ashes of a bonfire, left to smolder and gently burn on the embers.

The first time I wore Firedance was on a perfect summer evening in Chicago. I went to visit my best friend and meet her new baby. We spent a perfect evening out in downtown Chicago, walking the waterfront and then having dinner in the city. It was cool and balmy after a day of rain and I kept catching whiffs of Firedance the whole evening. Firedance was the perfect “night out” perfume.

Check out Ruth’s perfumes if you have the chance! I have now smelled four of her perfumes and all of them are beautiful and a well crafted. And if you live in the UK where Ruth’s perfumes are more accessible, you can order individual samples of the perfumes that interest you, or a discovery set. Cheers!
