Sarah Baker Perfumes: The Discovery Set
I have bought my fair share of fragrance discovery sets and this is the first time that I have liked every scent in a discovery set. For a brief second, I considered purchasing all five of the full size bottles. Sarah Baker Perfumes has been on my radar for a few months, in particular Bascule. I have an entire post coming up dedicated to Bascule alone, because I like it that much. Every single one of these five perfumes excited me in some way, and are unusual and fun. Here is a brief overview of the five scents included in the Sarah Baker discovery set.
Bascule- Grass, Peach, Bergamot, Lily of the Valley, Hay, Leather, Vetiver, Amber, Musk, Fir, Tobacco, Metal Tack.
Bascule was the reason I ordered this discovery set. It is also the one I’ve worn the most since getting this package. In short, this smells like riding a sweaty horse through hay fields, with a peach orchard in the background. As someone who grew up riding, this is such delight to wear. Check out my full review coming later for a more detailed look as Bascule.
Flame and Fortune: Orange Blossom, Pink Pepper, Apricot, Ginger, Mandarin Petigrain, Lily of the Valley, Iris, Jasmine, Tuberose, Motor Oil, Burnt Wood,, Labdanum, Fire, Mezcal.
Orange, jasmine, and Lily of the Valley, caught on fire in the desert near an oil spill. For me, this is a floral done right: fresh and creamy but dries down to something more loud and risky. The description also says “Pulp fiction as a fragrance” which is one of my favorite movies; how could I not like it?
Far From the Maddening Crowd- Heliotrope, Bergamot, Petitgrain, Eucalyptus, Black Cassis, Myrtle, Plum, Jasmine, Cedar, Castoreum, Musk, Oakmoss
Far From the Maddening Crowd has citrus in the top, that pairs nicely with jammy cassis and plum and some woody cedar. The eucalyptus adds an interesting element to this scent too. It gives Far From the Maddening Crowd a slightly mentholated quality that I think brings out the crispness of the citruses in the top notes. This is fragrance that feels like being outside to me.
G Clef- Grapefruit, Hedione, Bergamot, Lavender, Calone, Oakmoss, Coumarin, Amber.
Aquatic. This reminds me of being on the coast of Northern California. I like the way the lavender and grapefruit mix with each other. There is oakmoss to tone it down too. It smells like sea air on a really humid and sunny day. It’s really lovely, especially if you like aquatic scents.
Symmetry-Bergamot, Petitgrain, Neroli, Orange Blossom, Amber, Cypriol, Musk, Oud.
Symmetry reminds me of marmalade, bitter orange with a touch of sweetness. The oud in this is quite nice, the bitter and woody aspect of it pairing nicely with the orange top notes. The neroli helps this feel more soft, along with the musk. Symmetry was quite thought provoking for me when I first put it on. I thought it was going to be a citrus- forward fragrance, but then the oud comes to play and totally changes how this feels when I wear it.
If I was forced to choose favorites, I like Bascule and Flame and Fortune. They smell the most unusual to me. Sarah Baker Perfumes is based in London, but conveniently have a separate, US based shop. It’s incredibly difficult and expensive to ship perfumes over seas, so I really appreciate that Sarah’s perfumes are accessible to us Fume Heads in the US. My excitement over these samples makes me want to order samples of the rest of the line too. Check out Sarah Baker and I don’t think you’ll be disappointed!
