Diptyque: Foin coupÉ Fresh Mown Hay Candle
I am usually on autopilot when I am driving to visit my parents. Having lived in Colorado for 15 years, I admit I take for granted the mountain views I see every day and I use my driving time to catch up on podcasts. But every year in late summer, I see my favorite view driving to their house. The fields surrounding my parent’s house are dotted with hay bales, neatly bound together in rectangles. The patchwork of green fields, speckled with golden bales always pulls me out of autopilot mode. Perhaps it’s my lifelong dream to own a ranch or farm, or that in our technology dominated world, it’s nice to see something so rural. Mostly, it reminds me of my horses and the riding I did as a kid. I was, and still am, a horse obsessed girl.
You can imagine my delight when I found this candle, Diptyque Foin coupé (Fresh Mown Hay), that is a literal description of my favorite late summer view and has the scent to match my childhood memories of being around horses. It’s not a replacement for being at a barn, but Foin Coupé takes me back to weekends spent riding and caring for my horses. I devoted nearly every free moment when I was a kid to riding and taking care of my horses. I am lucky that my parents live in Colorado now, and that I can see my old horse Trinket any time I want. At nearly 30 years old, she is now retired to munching hay and dozing off in the sun, but I find it wonderful that a small piece of my childhood still exists. I rode Trinket over 20 years ago as a teenager, and now my three year old daughter rides her. It’s quite a site to see, boggling my mind that Trinket is still here to teach my daughter the ropes too.
If you have ever smelled sun-warmed straw, this candle is exactly that. Sweet, slightly damp and earthy, Foin coupé is fresh mown hay, with hints of honey in it, making it a touch sweeter and warmer. There is also a soft backdrop of wild herbs to round out the scent and give it a slight green edge. It’s damn near close to the scent I get when I walk into my parent’s barn to help feed the horses. If you have never had the pleasure of walking into a barn stacked to the rafters with hay, I would put that high on your list of things to experience. I find it grounding and comforting to be inside a barn.
This candle is available on the Diptyque website for purchase, it’s a website exclusive. A worthy investment for scenting your home!
