Diptyque: Tempo Eau de parfum

My favorite shirt when I was a kid was a blue and purple tie dyed shirt with a huge spiral that had killer whales in it. My biggest regret as an adult is that I don’t have that shirt any more. (I did a Google search while writing this for “blue and purple tie dye shirt with killer whales” but no luck in finding one.) I’ve been wearing Birkenstocks for almost 20 years; my mom wore them when I was growing up and I thought they were just so cool. And I’ve been on Team Patchouli since about 1998 when I started burning incense in my childhood room.

Diptyque Tempo is a tribute to the 60s, featuring patchouli, and it could not be more Sarah. I got a small sample of this from Lucky Scent right when it got released and I’ll admit I wasn’t into Tempo when I first got it. It’s funny how our noses and tastes can change, because now I’m quite in love with Tempo. It’s down right hippie, or as hippie as a luxury brand like Diptyque can be. Tempo is marketed as masculine fragrance, but don’t let that sway your impressions of it. I love wearing this!

Tempo’s notes are patchouli, mate, clary sage and violet leaf. When I wear Tempo, the word that comes to my mind is earth. It reminds me of when you start working in your garden in the Spring and you start turning over soil that has been frozen all winter, and a cool, wet, earthy scent fills the air as you lift shovel after shovel of soil. Tempo is that earthy smell, but without so much dampness to it. Although it’s not listed in the notes, I get a faint scent of mint in, which makes it feel more refreshing to wear. It also smells smokey to me and give Tempo even more depth. It’s a gorgeous, modern interpretation of patchouli.

Tempo is a fragrance I can say without hesitation that I would only wear when the weather is cold. What a treat this is to wear in the cold weather, especially right now when we are having an very cold snap. It feels cozy to wear, but reminds me that Spring isn’t far off. If you too are on Team Patchouli and you haven’t smelled this, I highly recommend that you get a sample and check it out! If you favored tie dye and still love your Birkenstocks, I think you’ll like Tempo too.
