2020 was the year that I played with more color in my makeup and played with color all over my face. I’ve always been fairly adventurous with lip colors, but always played it safe on my eyes and cheeks with browns and muted pinks. With a little encouragement from the Full Coverage Beauty Banter group, I really got out of my comfort zone this year and experimented with color. For the first time my makeup wearing life, I was wearing really sheer, light lipsticks and going bold and strong on my eyes and cheeks.
I’ve always liked wearing orange lips; Lady Danger and Lisa Eldridge Velvet Morning have been firm favorites for a long time. I did end up buying another orange lip this year too, the Gucci satin lipstick in Agatha Orange*. It’s the most orange lipstick I own, more orange than red, and a joy to wear. I’ve also like orange cheeks too, my favorite blush being Stila Convertible Color in Gladiola. I’ve owned Nars Taj Mahal blush* for a few years, but got the most use out of it this past year. It’s a gorgeous shimmery burnt orange, that looks great as an eyeshadow too. Taj Mahal also looks great with one of my favorite orange eyeshadows, Jasper, from the Natasha Denona Sunrise Palette. I also got a lot of wear out of the color Morgan in the Sunrise Palette, a light peachy orange. I wore my Nars Afterglow Lip balm in Torrid pretty frequently this year too. The Nars Afterglow lip balms may have replaced the Dior Lips Glows as my favorite sheer colored lip balm. I find the Nars ones more moisturizing than the Dior.
Yellow was a surprise color favorite from this year too. I was inspired by the Swallowtail butterflies I saw all summer in our backyard. They are a brilliant yellow, edged in black and delicate blue spots on the bottom of their wings. I’ve always liked wearing mustard yellow clothes, but never in my makeup. Again from the Sunrise palette, I’ve worn Carnelian and Citrine often. I like wearing Carnelian as a single color all over my lid, blown out into my crease and blended up to my eyebrow. Carnelian also pairs well with Jasper for a fun sunset colored eye and with Citrine for a multicolor yellow eye.
The biggest color surprise for me this year was pink. I’m not really a pink wearer, in either makeup or clothing. But I’ve been using it a bunch this year a loving it! My first eyeshadow palette that had pink in it was the Viseart Spritz Edit palette. I love creating an eyeshadow look with the dark red and pink in this palette. The Juvia’s Place The Berries Palette has lovely pinks and reds in it also. I specifically love the brightest pink in that palette; it’s nearly a neon pink and this color makes my green eyes pop. I had no idea that pink would do that! Other pink I have enjoyed wearing this year is the Lisa Eldridge lipstick in Velvet Carnival and Bobbi Brown Crushed lip color in Watermelon. And finally, I have a bright pink cheek that I loved wearing this year too, particularly in the summer. I bought the Mac Glow Play blush in Heat Wave*, a hot pink cream blush. I love wearing this on both my cheeks and eyes.
I’m not sure what colors will inspire me in 2021 yet, but at the tail end of this year, I’ve been inspired by glitter and wearing glamorous makeup, even if I have no where to go. 2020 has taught me it’s not worth it to save things for a special occasion and the appropriate time to wear glitter is whenever you want! Cheers and happy holidays!
