I was first introduced to Hendley Perfumes by my delightful friend Laura on Instagram when we did a fragrance sample exchange. She sent me Jupiter, which was right up my alley. I started exploring Hendley more; I was motivated by how much I liked Jupiter and also the varying size options for the bottles. While cruising around the Hendley site, I was most drawn to Mown. I ordered my sample of Mown from The American Perfumer as the Hendley shop is closed for the summer for a restock of their fragrances.

What a joy Mown is to wear for me! I have a penchant for fragrances that remind me of of being around horses. Having spend most of my young life horseback riding, it is always a joy for me to find a fragrance that reminds me of horses. My fondest memories of childhood are related to horseback riding with my sister, so I was overjoyed to find Mown and have it stir up some olfactive memories. Mown takes me back to summer days spend riding and caring for my horses. My sister and I used to lay in the shade of the poplar trees at the barn, drinking icy Cokes with the scent of hay and warm, sweaty horses drifting around us.

Mown embodies these memories of spending every spare second I had with my horses at the barn. I think Mown perfectly captures the smell of hay, dry, dusty, and slightly sweet. I really enjoy the dried fruit in Mown as well. It smells like apples soaked in bourbon and then dried in the sun. If you’ve ever smelled Calvados apple brandy, that’s what Mown smells like. I like the sweetness that the tobacco adds as well as the softness that the orris butter gives too. The Chamomile gives Mown a tiny astringent note, that keeps it from going overly sugary.

I have enjoyed wearing Mown this August in the late summer, and I am excited to wear it this upcoming Autumn too. I find it romantic thinking about wearing this in the filtered light of Autumn. This is the third fragrance I have tried from Hendley and I have been impressed with all three. It’s been a long time since I connected with a brand like this and connected with the stories behind the fragrances. While Hendley is closed for a restock, The American Perfumer is a great place to get Hendley- they have free shipping which is such a nice thing! Bourbon is next on my list to try from Hendley!
